Swine

The 4-H Swine project educates youth on all aspects of raising and training pigs for the fair. Members of the swine project will learn about different types of feed, proper portioning, how many times a day to feed, and what to look for when choosing a hog, along with how to wash, groom, and moisturize hogs. Swine showmanship differs slightly from other animal showmanship as rather than using a halter and lead rope to control a hog they must be trained with a pig whip, which is a long stick with a flexible tip used to guide a hog by gently tapping it. Whether participating in market, showmanship, or breeding classes, all youth will deeply enjoy the process and develop a deep compassion for raising hogs.
