The 4-H Rabbit project is a wonderful project for youth of all ages who are enamored with all things small and fluffy. Rabbits are a great animal due to the fact that they can easily be kept indoors, the cost of raising them is very low, and they're incredibly easy for younger members to handle. Throughout members time in the project they will learn how to care for rabbits, including proper feed options and portioning, grooming, and living conditions. Youth will also learn about different colorations and coat patterns, fur types, rabbit anatomy, medical conditions, and showmanship basics such as how to properly flip a rabbit over and check all the individual parts. Rabbit showmanship is for members of any age and perfect for primary members. All breeds are allowed including non-commercial breeds such as Mini lops and Lion heads. Juniors through seniors can participate in the market division. Market rabbits are shown in a group called a 'meat pen' which consists of 3 similarly colored and marked rabbits of the same breed. Some popular breeds of market rabbits are Californian and New Zealand rabbits, but others can be used. Overall, the rabbit group is a popular choice for all youth, no matter the age or whether they're new or returning members.
