The 4-H Chicken project is an amazing project for beginners and primary members due to the fact that most chickens don't need a massive area of space as they tend to be small, and they're fairly easy to handle which also gives it a strong appeal to members of all ages. Chickens are fairly low in cost and maintenance as they don't need quite as much feed as larger animals, and an excessive variety of supplies isn't necessary to keep them healthy and fair ready. For market chicken projects youth will have what is called a 'Meat Pen' which is a group of 3 similar animals of the same species and breed. For showmanship purposes many people opt for specialty breeds of chickens because of their unique and eye-catching plumage. Regardless of age or what division youth may be showing in, everyone works together as they want to see their fellow youth do well in something they all enjoy doing.
